Architecture and Urban Planning

Publications

Soffeh:

Soffeh is the faculty’s specialist publication. Recognised by the MSRT as a Scientific-Research publication, it is now three decades old. Launched in 1990, it started as a biannual publication, and turned into a quarterly since its third decade. Reviewing Iranian and world architecture present and past, and the associated research is at the heart of the publication. Areas of focus include architectural matters, landscape architecture, urban planning and design, project management and construction, post-disaster reconstruction, restoration and architectural history studies. Soffeh takes pride in its recognition in 2014 as the ‘Superior Art Publication’ in the 14th Festival of Celebrating Superior Researchers. This is a quarterly publishing a total of 28 articles every year. The publication is freely accessible through its website: https://soffeh.sbu.ac.ir/

Ganj Nameh:

There is a rich stock of outstanding works from the country’s multi-millennia history. These works deserve close inspection in order to shed light on the country’s identity. The publication of Ganj Nameh is probably one of the most important steps towards the introduction of the country’s hitherto little-known heritage, as it introduces some 600 significant works in a single collection in 20 volumes. To put these figures into context the number of available documentations of Iranian historic buildings mostly by foreigners, and many of which lacking accuracy, used to be a few dozens.

These volumes are thematically sorted and cover almost every building type, including five dedicated to houses, four to mosques and Friday Mosques, three to saints’ shrines, two to bazaars, two to palaces and gardens and the rest to schools, caravanserais and baths, and a single volume dedicated to Tehran’s religious buildings.

Ganj Nameh is the 1999 winner of the Book of the Year awards in art. This 25-year project is now complete, with the first five volumes now revised for their second edition.

The Yearbook:

The idea of publishing a yearbook for the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning emerged in the mid-2010s. It was initially intended to publish examples of architectural design studio works, and mainly for the international audience. This is now expanding to cover other creative works, and eventually all works completed in the Faculty. The format is also changed to bilingual to make it more accessible for the domestic audience as well. The unforeseen shortages of resources have currently forced the publication to be less frequent than annual: something publishers are hoping to address as soon as possible. The yearbook is published in electronic format, and available for free from the university website.
